WELCOME MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRPERSON OF THE 2nd INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY UKM-PSU 2024 (ISSTUP2024)

On behalf of the Organizing Committee, it is my great pleasure to welcome you to the 2nd International Symposium on Science and Technology UKM-PSU (ISSTUP2024). As the Chair of this remarkable international symposium, I am very pleased to meet all honorable plenary speakers, keynote speakers, researchers, scientists and graduate students from diverse scientific backgrounds in science and technology and related fields including food science to explore and present their esteemed research.

This is the second symposium after the first symposium in 2022 hosted by Faculty of Science and Technology, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) and Prince of Songkla University (PSU), Thailand as co-host for that year organized in hybrid. For this coming year 2024, Faculty of Agro-Industry is the host and Faculty of Science, Prince of Songkla University and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) are co-host of the symposium.

In the present day, the sustainability is the issues we have been challenging to ensure our future generations to meet their own needs including the pillars of environment, economy and social engagement. Academic partnership and collaboration can pave the way to achieve the SDG goals. So, the theme of ISSTUP2024 is proud to present “Food and Science for Sustainable Future”. The symposium is organized on 3rd May 2024 at Crystal Hotel Hat Yai, Songkhla, Thailand.

Throughout the symposium, there will be the opportunity to engage with leading experts and scholars in Food & Nutrition, Physical & Computational Science and Life Science (Biology, Microbiology, Biotechnology).

Our symposium is carefully designed to ensure all participants could be involved and inspire thought-provoking oral and poster presentations, exchange of cutting-edge research, further academic and research collaborations.

We would like to thank all of the sponsoring organizations including Faculty of Agro-Industry & PSU and private sectors for providing their financial support.

Thank you for being a part of ISSTUP2024 and for your commitment to driving food and science for sustainable future. Please prepare to be important person for a coming symposium in Hat Yai, Thailand.

ABOUT ORGANIZERS

Prince of Songkla University (PSU) Thailand

Prince of Songkla University (PSU) was established in 1967 under the Southern Development Plan policy with the intention to become the leading university in the southern region of Thailand, in terms of delivering graduate students, research, and academic services, whilst appreciating and maintaining arts and culture. The university’s educational management aims to develop graduate students empowering the country, and to adhere to a national educational approach that focuses on learner-centered education.

The educational philosophy of Prince of Songkla University is based on progressivism, the development of learners in all aspects, fostering social integration and adaptability. PSU believes that treating students through learner-centered education entails thoughtful consideration of various learner needs through the process of problem-solving and self-researching processes, and taking action inside and outside the classroom. Putting these ideas into action effectively results in sustainable learning approach, and forms the underlying basis of dynamic development. PSU also holds the notion that learning does not stop past university education, but continues throughout life. Accordingly, the educational management of the university aims to provide students with a thorough understanding and appreciation of lifelong learning.

Learn. Share. Change the World.

Historically, Faculty of Science began with the establishment of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia in 1970, with 5 departments, 16 academicians, and 37 students. Faculty of Natural Resource Sciences was formed in Sabah in 1975. In 1982, the original Faculty of Science was split into several faculties, namely the Faculty of Physical and Applied Science, Faculty of Life Sciences and Quantitative Studies Centre that eventually known as the Faculty of Mathematical Sciences.

When the University was incorporated in 1998, agreement had been reached for the Faculty of science and technology (FST) to be established on 19th July 1999 with four faculties combined, namely Faculty of Physical and Applied Science, Faculty of Life sciences, Faculty of Mathematical sciences, and Faculty of Natural Resource Sciences.

With this merger, FST becomes a more stronger and ready to tackle learning and research of science and technology to bring Malaysia into the new millennium and later became a model for restructuring of other faculties in UKM

Rational of the selection of FST is based on the following:

  1. FST is a combination of two knowledge, pure science and applied science that generates technologies,
  2. FST is an entity that preserves fundamental knowledge,
  3. FST also lead the field so that the knowledge be explored is up to date and always at the peak of knowledge.

Some adjustments have been done to offer all programs in FST more interesting and can tackle challenges in this new millennium. This new program is a package in which FST students not only proficient in science but acquired some skills that are useful in their future career. With this package FST is confident that graduates are able to adapt and be competitive in any situations.
